In 1942, Jack Churchill was an officer in Operation Archery, a bid by British forces to liberate parts of Norway from Nazi control. This is where our story begins: rooted in reality. The commanding officer you see here, Colonel John Durnford-Slater, existed. The lad next to him, Corporal Stanley, did not. We made him up. But the rest of this strip is really very historical in nature, at least according to Wikipedia our thoroughly academic research.
